The Christmas holiday is fast approaching, and we know everyone is very excited to start decorating their homes. Here are some tips to make sure you stay safe this festive period.

  • We all know older people who are at risk – make sure you check on older relatives and neighbours this Christmas – Is their fire alarm working? Do they know their evacuation plan?
  • Check your fairy lights are in good working order and replace any bulbs that have blown.
  • Don’t overload your plug sockets.
  • The Christmas dinner requires a lot of multitasking, but make sure you never leave your cooking unattended.
  • Make sure you never leave candles or incense sticks burning unattended.
  • If you have a real Christmas tree, remember to water it – the drier they are, the more flammable they are!
  • Lots of decorations are made out of tissue paper or cardboard which burn easily, keep decorations away from heaters, fireplaces and candles.
  • Take this opportunity to make sure your smoke alarm works and know your evacuation plan.
  • Remember that in an emergency you should call 999!

We hope you have a happy, healthy and safe festive period!
