After a recent incident involving fireworks, we wanted to take a moment to remind our residents about the importance of safety when using fireworks or celebrating this autumn!

As we approach bonfire night, it's understandable that many people will be setting off their own fireworks - but remember, safety is paramount when doing so! Every year the improper use of fireworks causes serious injuries, property damage, and fires. Fireworks are not toys and must be handled responsibly.

Below are some helpful things to keep in mind to stay safe when handling fireworks this year:

  • Know the local laws: look up local laws surrounding fireworks – especially what times it is legal to set them off!
  • Purchase from reputable vendors: Make sure to only buy from licensed retailers who sell approved products.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions: Carefully read and follow any instructions for fireworks.
  • Keep water nearby: Make sure that you have either a bucket of water, hose or fire extinguisher nearby just in case!
  • Never relight a dud: If a firework fails to ignite, don't relight it. Instead, wait at least 20 minutes before soaking it in water.
  • Dispose of used fireworks safely: When getting rid of used fireworks, make sure to soak them in water and dispose of them in a non-combustible container.

And most importantly, be considerate of your neighbours and local pets!

We hope everyone keeps the above in mind when celebrating and that we can all enjoy the fireworks safely.
