Keeping you safe - fire safety update
We know that some of you have understandable concerns about fire safety in our blocks, following the tragic events at Grenfell Tower last week. We are currently taking a number of actions to ensure that our properties meet the highest standards of safety. We would like to explain these to you – we hope that they will offer further reassurance and demonstrate our commitment to making sure your home is safe.
Abbey View and Munden View
As some of you may have noticed, there have been additional checks to some external parts of Abbey View and Munden View. Along with all other housing associations with high-rise blocks, we have been asked by the government to provide samples for testing, to demonstrate that we have no problematic material in the structure that could compromise fire safety. We will provide an update once we have had the results of these tests, but we do not anticipate any concerns being raised.
It is important to remember that there has not been any cladding applied to Abbey View and Munden View. While investigations over the causes of the fire at Grenfell Tower are still in the very early stages, it is currently thought that external cladding played a significant part.
As well as these checks, our annual Fire Risk Assessment will be happening at Abbey View and Munden View this week. This is a routine piece of work that was already scheduled before last week’s events. The assessment will highlight whether there are any additional measures we might need to take to improve the fire safety in these blocks. You may see specialist staff on site to carry out these assessments.
We are pleased to say that we will be attending a meeting being held by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service at the Meriden Community Centre on 6th July at 7pm. Everyone will be welcome to attend, and the meeting will cover fire safety tips and information relating to the high- and low-rise buildings on the Meriden. Trust staff will be in attendance to answer any questions you may have.
Fire safety in other properties
We are aware that some residents have also raised concerns about the fire safety of some of our properties in Boundary Way and the Harebreaks, where External Wall Insulation has been installed. We would like to reassure all residents that the materials used for these insulation programmes are very different from the cladding used at Grenfell Tower, and they meet the highest standards of fire safety under the building regulations. The system we used has been fully tested for fire resistance and is Class ‘O’ fire rated, which means it provides an additional level of protection against fire.
As always, your safety is our highest priority. We work closely with Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service at all times to ensure that all of our properties are safe and to provide information and reassurance to residents about fire safety.
We would encourage you to remain vigilant, report any potential fire hazards to us and to test your smoke alarms every week. Get in touch with our customer service centre to let us know if you have any concerns by calling 0800 2182247.
