Changes to Council Tax Benefit
Council Tax Reduction
Council Tax reduction replaced Council Tax Benefit in April 2013 as recommended by the Welfare Reform Act 2012.
As a result of this change Council Tax Reduction is allocated and managed by your local authority as opposed to being distributed by central government as was done previously.
If you are on a low income or claim benefits you could be eligible for a reduction of up to 100% but this is based on a number of factors including your household income and whether or not you have children living with you.
You can apply for the reduction if you own your home, rent, are unemployed or working.
