Since March 2020 and the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the government have introduced new schemes which have acted as a lifeline for so many people during such a difficult period.

The Coronavirus Act 2020 provided protection to tenants – whether in social housing or renting privately – by increasing notice periods and changing how and when landlords could evict tenants. People who receive Universal Credit were given a £20 per week uplift and a furlough scheme was introduced – which saw the government pay employees on the scheme up to 80% of their usual wage, keeping them on their employer’s payroll and protecting their jobs.

In the last few weeks there have been some changes to these schemes and initiatives – the eviction ban was lifted on October 1st and has returned to pre-pandemic conditions, and the furlough scheme and Universal Credit uplift have both ended. We have also recently seen energy and fuel prices rise.
