Jack in the Box is an incredibly fun and stimulating nursery that focuses on meeting the individual needs of each child and tailoring their learning and play time to suit them. The school is run from our Leavesden Green Community Hub during term time, as well as from five other nurseries in Hertfordshire.

I spoke to Lucy and Rachel from Jack in the Box, both of whom made it very clear that the children are right at the heart of what the nursery is all about. This is proven by their ‘outstanding’ grading from Ofsted and their recognition from Hertfordshire County Council. As well as promoting the key areas of learning such as numeracy and literacy, and following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, they also encourage independence, responsibility, creativity and decision-making.

In this open and safe space, the children learn how to be respectful to their friends and teachers, develop an awareness of others’ needs, and are given equal opportunities to learn and play.

Jack in the Box love to go above and beyond what is expected of them to ensure the best support for the children and their families. They consider the ‘parents as partners’ to make sure they get the support they deserve too, which included shopping for some of the parents who were unable to do it themselves during lockdown. They have a ‘living eggs’ programme that allows the children to watch baby chicks and ducks being hatched, they make trips to the local fire station to learn about fire safety, and they even got to audition for Britain’s got Talent!

Everything they do is based on their five core values:

  • To feel Safe and Secure – everyone’s safety and wellbeing are their priority.
  • Respect – everybody is respected, valued and listened to.
  • Ambition – they hope to provide the best outcome for every child in our community.
  • Active learning – an inspiring environment in which children are involved in their own development and learning.
  • Children are at the heart of everything they do – childhood is valued; each child is seen as unique, competent and capable and their individual interests are built on daily.

They welcome all children aged 2 to 4 regardless of needs and ability, and provide a happy and safe environment where all children can grow in confidence and meet their full potential. They are able to adapt their activities to those with special educational needs and ensure they have the right resources and equipment to support their development and learning.

We are very proud to be the home of Jack in the Box Leavesden and to provide them with this environment that the children so clearly thrive in.

Thank you to Lucy and Rachel for telling us all about their wonderful nursery – you can find out more about them here: jackinthebox.org.uk/
